Back in September, the very day after the Chevy commercial shoot where I was cast to embody the bygone good ol’ days of American wholesomeness, I found myself doing something much different. Much less wholesome. Still very American though. In Gray Haddock’s dark garage, surrounded by carefully art directed children’s letter blocks and a dirty bunny rabbit, I got my goth on. Bigtime. Zane Rutledge, of Zane TV, wanted to celebrate American McGee’s video game sequel Alice: Madness Returns (by Electronic Arts and Spicy Horse Games), by creating this live-action movie teaser trailer. The inspiration for this trailer being the original game trailer he made for the first Alice game ten or so years ago. He actually recreated his original CG trailer in HD as well, in honor of the occasion. I walked on set that day to meet The Mad Hatter Collective in my Alice costume, and the director of photography, Paul Gandersman, said, “Holy shit. Alice is here.” Special thanks in that department to Devyn Ray, who did makeup.
This has been a strange and wonderful week for me, with my videogame past coming back to kiss me straight on the mouth. I have to say, I’m into it.
The reaction so far has all been positive. This is what people are saying, with links:
“While the trailer features little more than Alice (who bears an uncanny resemblance to Garbage’s Shirley Manson) being lured back to Wonderland by her own madness, it shows a genuine love and faithfulness to the source material…” – FearNet
“It’s as cool as it is creepy, and it’s pretty damned creepy.” – ToplessRobot
“One is a live-action homage to the new game, Alice: Madness Returns. The other, and this is really cool, is a HD remastering of the original Alice’s trailer, which was first released all the way back in 2000. When trailers most definitely weren’t in HD.” – Kotaku
“Trailer alone is better than the entire Johnny Depp movie.” – commenter on 109.com
“Awesome” – G4tv
This video is frabulously fantastically dark. Now this is a Wonderland movie I would watch. –Buzzfeed
